Overview of Psychotherapy
Psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and family & couples therapy are applied to treat mood & bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders and trauma/loss among other conditions. Holistic care is also practiced where customized guided meditations are provided with talk therapy. I frequently work with creative people to help them realize their potential. I have a network of therapists and programs for comprehensive outpatient general psychiatry, substance use & addiction treatment.
How psychological issues affect daily life and relationships? I believe that psychological issues have an emotional origin. I believe that specific types of talk therapy can help one overcome negative emotions and experiences that may be effecting your life today. I often use guided meditations with talk therapy to help engage the unconscious mind in letting go of 'emotional baggage' and to alleviate anxiety. The types of talk therapy are explained below.
Talk therapy is the foundation of our full 45-50 minute session which can be with or without medication management. When patients already have a therapist, I usually just provide 30 mins of medication management. Unless the complexity of the medication management requires more time.
Types of Psychotherapy
Motivational Interviewing Therapy - this type of talk therapy is used in substance abuse & addictions. It can be applied to both behavioral and drug addiction. Motivational interviewing can help change negative, maladaptive and self-sabotaging behavior patterns while keeping you focused on accomplishing your goals.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy - this type of therapy is about making one aware of their unconscious thoughts. Carl Jung referred to this as the "shadow" mind. Once one becomes aware of the underlying motivations, one can begin to change their maladaptive and self-sabotaging patterns. However, it is easy to be to deny unconscious drives because it has been in one's "blind spot" for so long.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – this type of therapy helps identify one's core beliefs first so that once they become conscious, one can take a step-by-step approach to overcoming obstacles and accomplishing goals.
Family Therapy – Family therapy can be a great way to really get to know your partner or loved one. Contrasting communication styles are blended and conflicts within family systems are addressed. I use a variety of techniques in this type of therapy from Ackerman Institute trained specialists.
Couples Therapy – Not on the same page? We can discuss communication techniques to get you and your partner listening to and understanding one another.
